Anyways, I’ve been meaning to write this article because I recently discovered why I have gained (and stalled) with weight loss on Keto. Here we go:
The 5 Reasons you aren’t losing weight with Keto
Reason #1 Your Hormones are all jacked up
Yep. Those damn hormones. Cortisol to be exact. Cortisol is your body’s stress hormone and when it is elevated due to stress, your body goes into “flight or fight” mode and holds on to weight and stores your food as fat.
It’s much harder to get into and stay in ketosis when your cortisol is high because insulin rises as a secondary response to elevated cortisol. It’s a shit storm, really.
Here are some reasons your cortisol may be high:
You’re way too stressed- life, job, being a mom, money, relationships, you name it. If you are not coping with stress, your cortisol will be high.
- Too much exercise. As much as I am an advocate on all things fitness, too much, especially when it comes to cardio and HIIT training, causes stress on the body.
- Too much caffeine. Yep. I know, you don’t want to hear this but caffeine is a stressor. It’s a stimulant and drinking coffee when your cortisol is high is like adding lighter fluid to the fire.
- Not getting enough sleep. Not getting enough sleep puts stress on your body because you are not giving your body time to repair and refresh itself.
How do you test your cortisol?
A simple blood test at your annual physical will NOT tell you if you have high cortisol. For instance, I recently got a physical and my cortisol levels came back fine. However, just a couple of months ago, I got the proper test done, and my cortisol was through the roof!
To test cortisol properly, you have to do the saliva test, which checks your levels throughout the day or a urine test. Cortisol usually peaks in the morning, to help you get up, then it declines throughout the day. Unless you’re like me, in which case yours will be high most of the day (oopsie).
I am currently working on lowering my cortisol by using strategic herbal supplements, teas, eliminating coffee (not easy) reducing my high-intensity exercise, going to bed early and trying (trying) to reduce stress. Stay tuned.😜

Reason #2 Your Gut is a fudged up
Wait, what? Gut? Like your stomach? Like the powerhouse of your immune system, your gut. When your gut is imbalanced it means you either have:
- Too many bad bacteria
- Yeast overgrowth
- Leaky Gut
- I can go on and on.
Here is the thing about the gut, most diseases start there. If you have a messed up gut, there are studies now proving the connection to gut health to depression and brain health. If that isn’t enough for you to start paying attention to your gut, I don’t know what is.
An imbalanced gut can cause issues such as bloating, gas, water weight gain, extreme weight gain around the belly (tire belly), depression, anxiety, IBS, and all sorts of other issues you don’t want.
So, how do you know you have an imbalanced gut?
Well, if you have ever taken antibiotics, you probably have some gut issues. Antibiotics are like a nuclear gut to your bomb.
However, the only way to test 100% is to take a poop test. That is correct, I wrote poop as in kaka, 💩.
The answers are in the poop-trust me. Although the test isn’t the most exciting thing I’ve done this year, the results were invaluable and proved to me why I have been feeling so bloated and why my stomach looks like I’m 6 months pregnant most days.
Well, it turns out, not only do I have “too many bad guys” bad bacteria, but I also have some yeast overgrowth and not enough soluble fiber in my gut. The later is very common for long term keto dieters, however, with proper high fiber keto foods (flax, chia, greens, hemp) you should be ok.
How do you balance your gut?
Balancing gut requires patience, probiotics, diet changes, and lifestyle changes. There are a lot of factors that go into balancing your gut microbiome.
Reason #3 You have thyroid issues
Ah, the thyroid, the mother gland of the metabolism. The thyroid controls the metabolic rate of every organ in the body. It’s kinda a big deal. If it’s not functioning properly, you’ve got issues.
The thyroid gland gets activate to release a hormone into the bloodstream. Sometimes, these signals are not heard by the pituitary gland or sometimes there isn’t enough T4 to convert to T3. Long story short, a lot can go wrong.
If you have thyroid issues, you may be experiencing some or all of these symptoms:
- Weight gain
- Inability to lose weight no matter what you do
- Cold hands and feet
- No energy
- Dry skin
- Hair loss
- No focus
- Brain Fog
- Irregular Periods
- Blood pressure issues
- Digestive issues
Ok, this list is getting too long, you get the point.
The problem with Thyroid when it comes to testing is that most doctors only diagnose and treat by looking at the TSH levels. This is NOT an accurate way of checking thyroid function.
I REPEAT, TSH IS NOT AN ACCURATE MEASURE OF THYROID FUNCTION.
You need to have your T3, T4, Free T3, and Free T4 tested. If your doctor refuses to take these tests, RUN. Find another doctor. He/she is clearly misinformed and you should not waste your time on a doctor who doesn’t keep up to date with the latest thyroid research.
My advice? Find a functional or integrative medical doctor as I did. They are more open-minded and focused on finding the “root cause” and not just giving you “a pill for an ill”.
The Thyroid is not something to take lightly so if you suspect you have thyroid issues, you need to actively heal yourself so it doesn’t get worse.
I have a problem with my thyroid (shock). Everything happened all at once so it’s a chicken or the egg type of situation for me.
I am not an advocate for taking medications so I am currently researching ways to naturally heal my thyroid, however, I wouldn’t recommend you do this unless you know what you are doing.
Also, I am not opposed to taking hormone replacement therapy when needed. With that being said, I always think there are things we can try first like:
- Changing your diet
- Balancing Gut- yes they are related and an imbalanced gut can cause thyroid issues
- Regulating Cortisol- too much cortisol puts too much stress on the thyroid gland, again, all related.
Everything in our body is connected, it is a system. If one system is off, the others feel it. We have to pay attention to all the parts in a holistic way.
Reason #4- You still won’t give up that damn dairy
The last 2 reasons are way easier to fix because you have 100% control over them, unlike the last 3. I am going to sound like a broken record here but if you are not losing the weight you want with keto, it’s probably because you are eating too much dairy.
Too much dairy causes bloat, inflammation, water retention, mucous, puss, blah blah blah you get it, don’t you?
Every single time someone tells me they can’t lose weight on keto, I tell them to cut the cheese (no pun intended 😆) and they come back in a few weeks saying they lost weight. Yeah, duh. I told you so lol.

Seriously though, cut the dairy and you will see change.
Reason #5- You’re not moving your butt
Heya! The last reason you aren’t losing the weight you want on Keto is that you are a couch potato. Yes, when you start keto coming from a SAD diet, you will lose weight at first, but eventually, you will hit a weight-loss stall.
Proper diet and exercise go together like chocolate & peanut butter. You have to have both to be fit and healthy. The best way to burn more fat on Keto is to do strength training. When you build more muscle, that muscle burns more fat for you, even when you are sleeping? Who doesn’t want that?

First, you have to regulate your hormones, then balance your gut, then eat clean food, strength train, and the results will come! The weight will fly off effortlessly! But, if any of those systems are out of balance, you can starve and you will still GAIN weight. True story.
