How do you motivate yourself to lose weight? That is the one million dollar question and I’m going to answer it in this post!
Probably the most common question I get from my clients and in my inbox is “How can I motivate myself to lose weight?” It seems as if everyone lacks motivation for weight loss these days.
First off, I want to start by saying, motivation will only get you started; commitment is what will keep you going.
Inside my private online community for women who want to lose weight, BSB Tribe, I teach my clients how to stay committed to their personal health goals, however, I understand that motivation is important when it comes to getting started.
Getting motivated to lose weight is important because it’s what “lights the fire under your butt” to get the momentum going. In this post, I will share my top tips on how I motivated myself to lose 60 lbs within 8 months with keto.

How to Motivate Yourself to Lose Weight
Tip #1- Start with why
This is the most important step in finding the motivation to lose weight. Ask yourself why you want to lose weight. Your first answer may be something cliche like “I want to look hot” or “I want to fit into my clothes”, however, I encourage you to go deeper than that.
Take out a piece of paper and keep going deeper into your “why”. I call this the 7-Layers Deep Why. Keep asking why like an annoying toddler until you get to the root reason.
This is your real why.
This is what you should repeat to yourself every day, tape it on your mirror, on your forehead, on your fridge, on your computer, and on the pantry door.
We are so busy these days, we easily forget why we started on our weight loss journeys in the first place.
When you focus on what you want, it will come into your life. Focus on being healthy and a motivated person and that is who you will be.
Tip #2- Begin with the end in mind
Beginning with the end in mind is an idea I got from Stephen Covey, the author of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, a book I highly recommend every human being read. It really changed my perspective on my health, business, and life.
Where do you see yourself a year from now? 6 months from now? What doest hat version of yourself look like? What does she eat? What is her workout schedule? Is her lifestyle manageable to support weight loss for life?
Sometimes, when we start a special diet like keto or gluten-free, we go all gong ho on it but aren’t committed to sticking to it long term. Think about what can you do for the rest of your life!
Think about all of that and work your way back. In order to be that person, what do you have to do TODAY?
If you jump in full throttle and eat lettuce all day while spending hours on the treadmill, is that something you could sustain for the rest of your life? I doubt it.
Huge things can be accomplished by focusing on one small thing at a time.
Weight loss is a long-term game, think about what you can sustain as a lifestyle and start making those changes today.
Tip #3- Keep a Success Calendar and Reward yourself with Self Care
Notice, I said reward yourself with self-care, not food. You aren’t a dog. You don’t need to reward yourself with a “treat”.
Every month, set a goal that will get you closer to your ultimate weight loss desire. It can be pounds lost, inches lost, no cheating, no sugar, no eating after6, etc.
Now, print out a calendar and every day you commit to the goal, mark an“X” on the day.
Tell yourself that at the end of the month, if you checked off the entire calendar, you will reward yourself.
When I mean treat yourself, I don’t mean with food. Think about something you want but feel bad spending money on for no reason.
Some examples of this I do are get a cute new workout outfit, manicure or pedicure, spa day, eyelashes, a new hairdo, etc..
Make it something you really enjoy and will look forward to. This will keep you motivated to stay on track.
I love this one because it gives me something to look forward to and work for. Also, it makes it much easier to justify to my husband why I just spent another $250 on workout clothes. “But, I lost 10 lbs last month, I need these!” 😁
Tip #4- Focus on the NSV’s (non-scale victories)
Here’s the truth; the scale is a lying B. If you rely only on the number on the scale, you will be severely disappointed and unmotivated. There are so many factors that go into play when determining how much you weigh at a particular point in time, it’s almost impossible to track progress only by using a scale.
This is why I teach my clients inside BSB Tribe to take body measurements and focus on the NSV’s instead.
How do your clothes fit? Do you feel less bloated? Are your rings loose? Have people been asking you if you lost weight? Are you losing inches all throughout your body?
These things matter way more than the number on the scale because weight varies daily due to many different reasons as I mentioned before.
I would recommend you weigh yourself weekly, but don’t depend on that number. Focus more on your measurements and how you feel and fit into your clothes instead. It doesn’t matter how much you weigh if you can fit into your skinny jeans. Weight is just a number. Stop giving that piece of metal so much power!
Tip #5- Join a community of like-minded women with the same goals
There is something powerful that happens when a group of like-minded women gets together with the same goals. They start to support each other, encourage each other and motivate each other.
I see it every day inside our private community, BSB Tribe. We share our wins and struggles and knowing that we aren’t alone in this journey helps us press on no matter what happens in our lives.
Just like anything else, two minds are better than one. Community, accountability, and support are crucial when it comes to weight loss.
Tip #6- Don’t Compare Yourself to Others
Nothing kills motivation faster than seeing someone else getting extreme weight loss results doing the EXACT same thing you are, but you are at a null.
However, you must remember that we all have different bodies, metabolisms, and situations. There are many factors to consider such as hormones, gut, prior diets and to some extent, genes.
Keep your eyes on your plate and don’t compare yourself to a stranger on the internet. If transformation pictures depress you instead of motivating you, stop looking at them.
Do the work and the results will come. We are all on our own journeys and some take longer than others. Trust the process. Health is a lifetime commitment, not a quick fix.
Tip #7-Follow a Plan
The best way to stay motivated to lose weight and get fit is to follow a meal plan and workout plan. Having a plan to follow gives you structure and helps you stay committed to reaching your weight loss results without trying to “wing it” yourself.
Following a structured meal plan and workout plan helps you stay on track and gets your results faster which helps you obtain even more motivation to keep going.
Weight loss success happens when you combine the following things; the right food plan with the right workout plan.
After years of following the ketogenic diet, losing over 110 lbs., studying nutrition and helping busy women lose weight, I’ve come to realize the dynamic duo of weight loss; Clean Keto & Strength Training.
Combined, these two provide powerful results but you are probably thinking, “I don’t have the time to create my own meal plans and workout plans. Don’t worry girl, I got you covered. What if I told you you can get monthly meal plans and workout plans that can get you the weight loss results you desire for only $1 today? WHATT? Yeah, I know.
I know how hard it is to lose weight. I know how hard it is to stay motivated and how time isn’t on anyone’s side these days. You have so much going on and I want to take meal planning and workout plans off your plate. You don’t even have to think about it anymore, I have done all the work. All you need to do is download the plans and follow them. (bummer, I can’t do that part for you)
